Opposition alliance split in to 3 PDF Print E-mail
The common opposition alliance that contested the presidential elections under the sign Swan, has now decided to contest the coming presidential elections in three fronts named the UNF, United Democratic Front and Tamil National Alliance.


UNF will be contesting under the symbol Elephant under the leadership of Ranil Wickramasinghe, the JVP and the United Democratic Front will contest under the symbol Rabbit under Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s leadership and The Tamil National Alliance will be contesting in Tandem with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in the north and east.

The discussions that had been going on among the opposition parties to contest the gen elections as well under the symbol Swan were not successful and as a result they have finally decided to go to it in three separate fronts. Though the UNF has initially offered to appoint Gen. Sarath Fonseka to the Parliament on the national list, the general has insisted that he must contest the elections in any dist. Opposition sources said that since the opposition is no longer contesting under a common symbol Gen. Sarath Fonseka will be contesting in Galle dist on a United democratic Front ticket.
