22 candidates want to be the next President of Sri Lanka 1 rejected PDF Print E-mail
This time the number of candidates handing over their nominations for the Presidential elections has been the highest, creating history.
Twenty three candidates the largest in a Presidential race so far in Sri Lanka submitted their nominations to contest the January 2010 Presidential poll to Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake at the Elections Secretariat in Rajagiriya between 9 am and 11 am today. Out of the twenty three candidates, 18 are from recognized political parties and the rest Independents. However, the focus will be on the two main contenders President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is seeking a second term in office and Sarath Fonseka of the National Democratic Front.

Taking the Election Commissioner’s statement that a candidate can protest regarding the other candidate’s nomination and or the person, it was significant to witness an objection against the candidate Sarath Fonseka was raised by Mr. Sarath Kongahage. But the protesters reason that Mr. Fonseka was an American Citizen was rejected by the Election Commissioner as there was no valid documented proof to back the accusation.

Election Commissioner accepted all nominations except the one of Nelson Perera. He rejected the nomination of Mr. Perera, the candidate of the Sri Lanka Progressive Front over certain discrepancies in his nomination papers.

Hence the candidates who want to the next President of Sri Lanka:
