UNP, the main opposition says that the Proportional Representation system should be scrapped and replaced by a mixed system which combined the Proportional Representation system and the First Past the Post system.

Leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed this sentiment when addressing the party’s Youth Front meeting held at party headquarters, Sirikotha. A future UNA government would introduce a new constitution and abolish the PR system said Mr. Wickramasinghe.

He iterated that the executive presidency would also be abolished.

Mr. Wickramasinghe said that Sri Lanka should follow the systems prevalent in Japan and the USA where national policies do not change though prime ministers and presidents change.

A UNA government would also introduce a new 25-year development plan. This, he said, would include midterm plans as well. “This plan would be one which will not change when a government changes. Today development plans change when ministers are changed from time to time, and this tradition should be got rid of,” he said. The opposition leader stressed the need for increasing the state revenue in the next 25 years. He said the objective of creating the opposition alliance was to diversify local production and create an environment in which the country could produce cameras, mobile phones and other digital equipment. Mr. Wickremesinghe said the UNA would also focus on developing the agricultural sector. “We will turn farmers into agri-businessmen, It is high time the economy was steered in this direction as we cannot always depend on sectors such as the apparel sector,” he said.
