Cancel election results in some areas- UNP PDF Print E-mail
The main opposition party in Sri Lanka, the United National Party (UNP) yesterday demanded the Election Commissioner to cancel the southern provincial council poll results in some areas.

Earlier the Election Commissioner warned that the results will be nullified at any polling station in cases of violence or malpractices.

General Secretary of the UNP Tissa Attanayake Speaking to the media accused that yesterday's election in Southern PC was highly corrupted.

He alleged that several ruling party supporters as well as the candidates violated several election laws and committed malpractices during the voting yesterday. He further described yesterday's election results in the Southern Province as the beginning of the end of the UPFA government.

But Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake said that Southern Provincial Council elections were peaceful without major incidents. Polls chief says election related violence has dropped sharply during the polls yesterday due to security by the police.

He thanked the political parties for their assistance during yesterday's polls.
Sri Lanka’s election watchdog CaFFE too confirmed a low violence report in on the Election Day.
Southern Provincial council election was held yesterday to select 55 members to the council for another four-year term.

It was the 18th time the main opposition party, the UNP lost an election in Sri Lanka
